How to renew your Texas driver's license

In order to always keep your driver's license valid, the state of Texas offers you four different options to renew your Texas driver's license. Online, by mail, by the phone, or in person.If your driver's license has been expired for longer than two years you will only be allowed to renew your Texas driver's license in person.

You can renew your Texas driver's license online if:

  • Your license is a Class C or CM and hasn't been expired for more than two years.
  • You completed your last renewal in person.
  • You are between the ages of 18 and 79.
  • You don't have any outstanding tickets or warrants.
  • You haven't experienced any changes in your vision, physical, and mental health.
  • Your license renewal invites you to do so.

To renew your Texas driver's license online:

  • Gather up your driver's license and Social Security card. You must enter both of these sets of numbers.
  • Have a Visa, MasterCard, or American Express, or Discover credit card ready to pay the appropriate fee. Your fee will vary depending on age.
  • Head to the DPS's Driver License and ID Card Online Services System.

To renew your Texas driver's license by mail if you are out of state:

  • Complete an Out of State/Country Application (Scan Card/Form LI-50).
  • Complete a Texas Driver License & Identification Renewal - Duplicate Application (Form DL-43).
  • Complete an Explanation for Eye Specialist {Form DL-63) with your eye care specialist if you've had a traffic violation within the last four years.
  • Complete the United States Selective Service Registration (Form DL-15) if you're a male between the ages of 18 and 26 and not in the military.
  • Gather proof of your Social Security number.
  • Make a check or money order for the amount of the appropriate fee payable to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

  • Your last driver's license renewal was online, by phone, or by mail.
